Heat is Hard. Take Care of Yourself & Your Team
Extreme heat is hard on our emotional and mental health. It can affect how you and everyone on your team communicates and works.
We don’t talk enough about this part of climate change . . . .
About 30% of people in the US can't afford to turn on their air conditioning (only about 70% have air conditioning). Optimal sleeping temperature is under 70º F. So folks aren’t sleeping as well.
While we talk more about winter seasonal affective disorder, summer seasonal depression is real, especially in extreme heat and humidity. Other mental conditions are made worse in heat: substance use disorders, anxiety and stress-related disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia all are exacerbated by hot and muggy conditions.
Many US adults are on medications that are affected by heat and need to monitor and maybe adjust their dosage:
- 10% are on antidepressants
- 12% take insulin
- 20% take ACE inhibitors
Extreme heat has also been shown to affect cognition:
- more aggressive behavior
- more impulsive decision-making
- more difficulty with memory and brain fog
So be more gentle with yourself and others. If you’re feeling ‘off’ in the heat, it’s normal. Take care of yourself.
